The Rhinoceros Animal Totem
The Rhinoceros is a survivor of the age of giant mammals. When other animals of this age could not survive the harsh elements and difficulties they faced, the Rhinoceros persevered through it all to become the powerful animal that we know today. They are known to prefer solitude and find comfort in their own company. They have poor eyesight but nature compensates for this by providing the Rhinoceros with acute hearing and an excellent sense of smell. Theses characteristics help them to hear and smell danger approaching and to better find food sources for sustenance. Their thick leathery skin is strong and offers them much protection from the elements.
The Rhinoceros Totem teaches us how to quiet our busy minds and enjoy our own company. Although they have a reputation for aggression this is not their natural disposition; they are peaceful and usually timid animals. They are strong and resilient and have many admirable virtues.
The large powerful tusks of a Rhinoceros helps him to forage for food and roots in the ground. They can also be a deadly form of protection when this animal feels threatened. They will only be aggressive when they are freighted or under attack. They are more apt to go out of their way to avoid trouble and are usually successful.
Those who are said to posses Rhinoceros like qualities have an ability to create a personal space for themselves that is safe and comforting. They know how to calm their busy mind to think more clearly in order to make well thought out decisions. They are discriminating and look beneath the surface of things and do not take everything at face value. They are thoughtful and wise and seek their own council.
The Rhinoceros possesses many animal virtues that are powerful and valuable and which any person would be wise to emulate or divine. One who has the power of the Rhinoceros will see enhanced spiritual growth through patience, the ability to look beneath the surface of things to get to the real issues, the wisdom to slow their busy mind and channel the power of self knowledge and self discovery; they will also learn how to look within for the answers to the complicated questions of life. They will understand the importance of having patience with others and themselves and how to persevere through life’s difficulties.
The stately Rhinoceros Totem possesses the following virtues:
