The Eagle Totem
The skies will never see a more noble and graceful creature than the Eagle. This animal has been respected and revered throughout the ages by ancient and modern Indian tribes and their Shaman. These tribes who are so connected to the elements and the Earth understand the true influence these creatures’ posses. They are powerful, legendary animals that own many admirable virtues.
The large powerful talons of an Eagle are extremely strong and contain sharp nails. Their talons are used for grasping prey and bringing it back to their nests; the Bald Eagle as been known to carry prey as large as a small sheep in its grasp without difficulty. They love fish and often swoop down, barley skimming the water as the grasp their fish prey in their claws. Eagle’s have excellent eyesight and it is 2x that of humans. The have an excellent view of things from high above.
Eagles, like many species of birds, breed and nest in pairs, they mate for life and build their nests and raise their young with their partners. The males of the species often hunt for prey and the female takes care of feeding and brooding of their offspring. The American or Bald Eagle can fly at speeds in excess of 30 miles per hour and when they dive for prey their speed can reach 100 miles per hour. They can soar in the sky for hours at 10,000 foot altitudes, using wind currents to help them glide long distances.
Eagles enjoy a long life, with most types living thirty years and beyond. Aside from their mating habits they are not social and do not group together with other Eagles except their own families. They usually build their nests in high trees. The American Eagle’s nest has been recorded as being as large as nine and half feet in diameter by 20 feet deep.
There are many mythological connotations associated with the Eagle. They are said to be the symbol of Zeus, the powerful leader of Mount Olympus. The American Indians call the Eagle the “Great Spirit” or the Father of all living things. They are representative of all the elements, Fire, Earth, Air and Water. Their predominate element is, of course, Air.
To watch an Eagle in the wild is to truly experience its grace and magnetism. Their soaring flight is majestic and graceful.
